Getting Started

What is Geobble?

Geobble is an AI-powered platform for creating beautiful, interactive maps. It bridges the gap between professional GIS tools and accessible data visualization, enabling you to:

  • Transform complex geospatial data into interactive, explorable maps
  • Use natural language to query and analyze geographic data
  • Create professional visualizations without coding expertise
  • Publish and embed maps on any website
  • Collaborate with team members through organizations

Your Account

When you sign up, you'll create an account with a unique handle. Your handle serves as your identifier across the platform and appears in all your resource URLs (e.g. geobble.com/@yourhandle).

Geobble supports two account types:

  • Individual - Personal accounts for independent users
  • Organization - Team accounts with role-based permissions and shared resources

Core Resources

Your account contains six main resource types:

  • Projects - AI-powered map-building workspaces with chat assistants
  • Maps - Published, shareable snapshots of your projects
  • Sources - Your uploaded geospatial data files
  • Collections - Organized groups of related sources
  • Themes - Saved map styling configurations
  • Symbol Sets - Reusable custom icons and markers for your maps

Every resource has a permanent slug - a URL-friendly identifier that ensures links you share will always work.

Working with Data

Uploading Sources

Geobble makes it simple to upload and process your geospatial data.

Supported Formats

We support a wide variety of professional geospatial formats:

  • GeoJSON (.geojson, .json)
  • Shapefiles (.shp - uploaded as .zip with accompanying files)
  • KML/KMZ files
  • GeoPackage (.gpkg)
  • File Geodatabase (.gdb)
  • CSV files with coordinate data
  • GML, DXF/DWG, and more

Upload Limits

  • Maximum file size: 200 MB per upload
  • Files are processed automatically after upload

How to Upload

  1. Navigate to Sources in your sidebar
  2. Click New Source
  3. Select the collection where you want to add this source (or create a new one)
  4. Choose your upload method:
    • Upload - Upload files directly from your computer
    • Extract - Import data from a URL or document (AI-powered extraction)
    • Copy - Duplicate an existing source

Processing Pipeline

Once you upload your data:

  1. Geobble processes your file through automated ingestion pipelines
  2. Your data is imported into a spatial database optimized for geographic queries
  3. The system extracts metadata (feature count, bounds, attributes)
  4. Optimized map tiles are generated for fast rendering
  5. Your source status updates from PENDING to PROCESSING to READY
  6. You can preview your data on an interactive map

Source Preview

Before using your data in a project, you can preview it to verify everything looks correct. The preview displays:

  • Data points rendered on an interactive map
  • Attribute information for each feature
  • Data bounds and coverage area
  • Feature count and geometry types

Data Extraction

Geobble can extract geospatial data from documents using AI:

  1. Navigate to Sources > New Source > Extract
  2. Choose your input type:
    • Text - Paste content directly
    • URL - Import from a web page
    • File - Upload a document
  3. Geobble analyzes the content and extracts location data
  4. Preview the extracted data before saving

Source Status Tracking

Every source has a status indicating its processing state:

  • PENDING - Upload received, awaiting processing
  • PROCESSING - Currently being ingested
  • READY - Successfully processed and available for use
  • ERROR - Processing failed (check error message for details)
  • ARCHIVED - No longer active but preserved

Organizing with Collections

Collections help you organize related sources together - think of them as folders for your geographic data.

  • Group related data (e.g., "NYC Locations," "Sales Territories")
  • Control visibility at the collection level
  • Simplify navigation as your data library grows
  • Share organized datasets with your team

Projects & Maps

Projects

A project is your map-building workspace. Each project includes:

  • An interactive map canvas
  • An AI chat assistant that can query your data and build visualizations
  • Support for multiple data layers from your sources
  • Styling controls for customizing your map's appearance

Creating a Project

  1. Go to Projects in your sidebar
  2. Click New Project
  3. Add data sources to your project
  4. Use the AI assistant or manual controls to build your map

Publishing Maps

When your project is ready to share, you can publish it as a map:

  • Published maps get their own shareable URL
  • Maps can be embedded on external websites
  • Maps are interactive - viewers can zoom, pan, and explore your data
  • You can control visibility (Public or Private)

Symbol Sets

Symbol sets are collections of custom markers and icons for your maps.

  1. Go to Symbol Sets in your sidebar
  2. Create a new set and upload custom SVG icons
  3. Apply symbols to your map layers in projects

AI-Powered Features

Project AI Assistant

Each project includes an AI-powered chat assistant. Describe what you want to build or ask questions about your data:

  • "Show me all points within 1km of Central Park"
  • "Display census tracts with population density over 10,000"
  • "Color the regions by population"

The assistant converts your natural language into spatial queries and applies the results to your map in real time.

AI Data Extraction

Geobble can extract structured geospatial data from unstructured content like web pages, documents, and pasted text using AI.

Studio

Geobble Studio is a separate application for advanced map composition using the Geobble Map Specification (GMS). Studio provides fine-grained control over map styling, layer configuration, and spatial operations.

Studio is accessible from the sidebar and opens in a separate window.

Credits & Billing

Geobble uses a credit-based system. Credits are consumed by various platform operations.

Plans

  • Free - Includes a monthly credit allowance for getting started
  • Pro - Higher monthly allowance for independent makers
  • Business - For teams collaborating on shared data
  • Enterprise - For organizations with advanced needs

What Uses Credits

  • Storage rental - Credits per GB stored, billed daily
  • AI chat - Credits per message based on token usage
  • Spatial operations - Credits for queries and analysis
  • File ingestion - Credits per source processed
  • Tile generation - Credits per tile set generated
  • Data export - Credits per export

Credit Packs

You can purchase additional credit packs at any time from Settings > Billing. The billing page also shows your current balance, storage usage, daily cost, and remaining runway.

Storage Runway

Your storage is rented day-by-day from your credit balance. The runway indicates how many days your current balance will cover at your current storage usage. If credits run out, your account enters read-only mode until you top up.

Understanding Your Account

Your Handle

Your handle is your unique identifier on Geobble. It appears in all your resource URLs:

geobble.com/@yourhandle

Handles auto-generated at signup can be changed once in Settings > General.

Visibility Controls

Control who can see your resources:

  • Public - Anyone with the link can view
  • Private - Only you (and organization members) can view

The Free plan includes a limited number of private resources (projects, collections, maps, symbol sets, and themes). Paid plans (Pro, Team, Enterprise) include unlimited private resources.

For more granular access, you can share individual resources (sources, collections, maps, projects, symbol sets) with specific users at different permission levels (Viewer, Editor, Admin).

Account Types

Individual Accounts

Personal accounts for independent users:

  • Single owner with full control
  • Ideal for freelancers, researchers, and individual professionals

Organization Accounts

Team accounts for collaborative work:

  • Multiple members with role-based permissions (Viewer, Editor, Admin, Super, Owner)
  • Centralized resource management
  • Shared access to all organization resources

Profile Settings

Customize your account in Settings:

  • General - Display name, about, handle, language preferences
  • Security - Two-factor authentication, active sessions
  • Billing - Plan, credits, storage usage, currency preference
